The "if it can happen to Trump, it can happen to you" crowd is awful quiet right now

After serving hist first term as president and after his failed attempt to overthrow the federal government, Trump faced several lawsuits. In particular, New York v. Trump and E. Jean Carroll v. Donald J. Trump. The Right's propaganda complex made these out to be politically motivated and frivolous cases. The fact is that Trump is a conman and has been on the receiving end of lawsuits for most of his life. These cases alleged that Trump is a fraudster and a sexual predator, which are both things that MAGA supposedly hates. Instead of preemptively labeling these lawsuits witch hunts, MAGA should have sought the truth and let them play out.

At the time, my mom posted at least two Facebook posts that boil down to "if they can do this to him, they can do it to you." I was able to find one. I'll update this post if I find the other.

If you're unfamiliar with the outcome of the E. Jean Carroll case, a jury found Trump liable for sexual assault. What's more, Trump's own supreme court denied his appeal. Nothing about this looks like the case was purely politically motivated. Which, to me, means that all Trump would have had to do to avoid the case was not sexually assault E. Jean Carroll. And I agree, the courts can (and should) do this to anyone who sexually assaults someone, E. Jean Carroll or otherwise.

I want to contrast this fear mongering with an article from Reuters.

If you were afraid of the courts because they punished Trump for fraud and you don't currently fear ICE, fuck you. Sincerely.

When Trump appears in court, he's not defending you. He doesn't know you and he doesn't relate to you. You live a completely different kind of life than the one he knows. While you make your living doing honest work, Trump makes money from crypto scams, public bribes, and insider trading. In no way is Trump facing legal trouble a threat to anyone other than Trump.

ICE, on the other hand, is rounding up brown people en masse and illegally holding them in concentration camps. Not because they did anything wrong. Just because they look vaguely Mexican.

Call me a radical, but I don't believe that anyone should expect to be illegally detained or killed simply because of the color of their skin. I don't think standing up against ICE should result in a death sentence. And I don't think anyone cheering this on should deny that they're hateful racists.

I can't say "this could happen to anyone" just yet. I get it. My mom's white. She worships Trump and then Jesus, in that order. She'd never join protesters in the street; the thought of protesters being firehosed in freezing temperatures brings her pleasure. She has no reason to fear ICE. It's purely a question of empathy for her. I am disappointed to say she's seemingly incapable.
